INTERVIEW WITH GRASSO & MAXIM
David Grasso and Julian Maxim are two guys based in Colombia. They started their careers as individual DJs and in 2008 they decided to create the duo you know nowadays as Grasso & Maxim.
The style of Grasso & Maxim is unique with lot of groove, fresh and explosive sounds, renowned for their great feeling for the crowd and there skills behind the decks.
At this time the duo is working with major labels like NIGHT LIGHT RECORDS (Mladen Tomic & Sinisa Tamamovic Label), TOOLROOM RECORDS (Mark Night Label), DEEPERFECT RECORDS (Stefano Noferini Label), MAKTUB MUSIC (Arjun Vagale Label), and many more. They also spinning as well alongside great top DJs on huge events in South America.
Hey guys thank you for talking to us and let´s start with a little introduction about you. How did you get into it all and who were those early inspirations?
Today we see how the DJs are made, fashion or fame. But the truth is that we were born with this love for electronic music, when they still were kids as our comrades the spent watching programs cartoons, we watched programs of electronic music festivals live, interviews and everything about electronic music .
The special thing about all this is that by then we did not we’d known, however did the same activities, instead of doing what all kids our age did we not spent watching these programs and learning to mix. By that time and even today our greatest inspirations and idols are and will CRISTIAN VARELA & MARCO BAILEY. Our training process as Djs was empirical, we never turn to an academy or someone to teach us, same with the issue of production.
- Your production is frequently played out by huge names in the industry. Can you remember that first defining moment you heard your music being played out?
In 2008 we started to take our first steps in the production, after more than a year in the study released our first single XCLUSIVE, by then our genre was House. Such was the acceptance that had the track to Djs of the stature of ROGER SANCHEZ, ERICK MURILLO, ROBBIE RIVERA by then the Top Djs of House included it in its track list, it was very exciting to see how our track sounded at major festivals and parties, from that moment we realized we had a talent and we had to use it, it is clear that our style evolved up to the Tech House & Techno we produce today.
- Have you managed to get used to that or does it still give you that same feeling of excitement?
Of course, we still feel the same excitement to see how each weekend our sound tracks around the world and are mixed by Top Djs industry at major festivals and clubs. It’s very exciting every weekend to watch a video, see a chart, a track list and to receive messages congratulating these artists for our work and our tracks.
- Looking further into 2016, will you be focusing more on playing out or working in the studio?
The truth’ve been away from study for several months to find tours, but from June try to balance the two things, we have a lot of work accumulated in the studio and we catch up, of course without leaving aside the events.
- What would be that one tip for up and coming DJs and producers looking to break into the scene?
Our advice to these new generations of Djs and Producers is a constant and dedicated work, stay in this industry is not easy and for this we must work very hard. We must constantly reinvent itself as gender change, styles evolve and we must be on par with all this. And finally maintain humility, we have seen how guys manage to come to a good label or some top industry Djs mix some of their tracks and they with this already create a ROCK STAR.
- If you could define the music you make, curate and play without using genre terms like “house” or “techno”, how would you describe it?
We have always stood out for a style that is not commercial but not dark, music that always keeps you up without getting tired, explosive sounds that fill you with a lot of energy and euphoria, that we apply both our productions and our live set.
- Do current, contemporary sounds and styles influence you in the studio? Or would you describe it as a timeless working environment?
Constantly we analyze the industry. Labels, artists and the public. Labels analyze how they evolve genres, new sounds and what these companies are getting to launch it.
Top Djs in the industry, we analyze what are mixing, styles and genres that include in their live set. And in public, we analyze what they are hearing, because styles are more inclined, artists follow. With this information we are going to study and try to make a product that covers all these parameters, it is clear that although we consider the above, each of our productions has that style that has always characterized Grasso & Maxim.
- How do you spend your time between your gigs when you Travel?
The truth we are awaiting social networks, we also analyze and prepare our live set for each concert, we tested our new hardware and try to produce a little on our laptops, but that does not give us very well Hehehe, do not concentrate well.
- Do you have other than the obvious equipment, clean underwear, your passport, etc, what are three essentials you bring with you on the road?
In our luggage was not doing anything out of the ordinary, suddenly can not miss some good sunglasses.
- There seems to be a lot of great techno coming from overseas at the moment, what is the scene like over there and what do you think has helped it thrive so much?
Colombia is a country that has greatly evolved in electronic culture, generating large producers who currently work for the largest labels in the industry, this has helped a little for all Top Djs have been interested in Colombia and want to perform concerts our cities. We have had the opportunity to share the stage with great artists and each of them have are in love with our country, its friendly people and a party from start to finish is enjoyed. For this important festivals have been created that have generated more love for electronic culture among them we can mention to the Freedom of the city of Medellin.
- One just for fun…. what’s the wildest or most embarrassing thing you’ve seen or done at a show?
The truth has never happened to us during our shows something strange, a well maybe once a woman who showed us her breasts, one said Grasso on the other Maxim Jejeje
- Finally, could you recommend two DJs or producers to our readers that you feel deserve their attention?
Always we recommend two great artists always include their tracks in our live set they are SINISA TAMAMOVIC & MLADEN TOMIC, to mention a third good you we love ADRIAN HOUR.
