INTERVIEW WITH BROTHERS IN PROGRESS
Naples is a hotbed of electronic music talent right now. Marco Carola is the most obvious exponent of the city’s penchant for eclectic sounds, but a host of other adept DJs and producers are starting to emerge from the city, making their presence felt on a national and global scale. Pierluigi & Gianluca Di Tonto AKA Brothers in Progress are two such individuals.
Hey guys thanks for talking to us. Now it s already June, how do you reflect back on 2014? What lessons do you take into the to 2015 and there was a special moment that you want to tell us about?
First of all, we’d like to say hello to every reader!!!
2014 has been a turning point in our professional life, as we’ve been produced by noteworthy labels such as BITTEN, BLA BLA, MONZA IBIZA RECORD and BLACKFLAG of Stacey Pullen.
2015 has started even better with the release of our e.p. PARABELLUM, on Highgrade Records and with another track, KEMEA, released on Brise, both labels very well known in the house and tech house scene. Moreover, one of the most satisfying and touching moments this year
was when Todd Bodine expressed his desire to release an e.p. with both above mentioned tracks: one of our main goals had been finally reached and one of our dreams had come true!!
Since when are you involved in electronic music and when was the point of breakthrough which let you become professional?
We started up in the early 90’s playing techno – progressive tunes by RISING HIGH, UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE, PLANET E and SOMA, mostly supporting some of the top world renowned DJ’s such as DERRICK MAY, ROBERT ARMANI, KENNY LARKIN, DEMON WILD and many others.
After several individual experiences, we got back together in 2010 with our first personal release on HIGH DEFINITION RECORD: SHELL SHOCKED.
Do you have a particular gig in the upcoming summer season you are looking orward to and what are your music plans for 2015? Do you have new projects in progress?
We’re waiting to know where our next Summer tour will take us, since we’re about to sign a contract with a famous booking agency that will hopefully make us play all over the world.
Your new EP Kamea EP on Briese records is again a great floor filler. Where do you know Helmut Dubnitzky from and how did you come together for his label?
We just never gave up, we kept on sending Helmut our new tracks, we worked hard and consistently until he recognized there was something good about us!!!
If you could define the music you make, curate and play without using genre terms like house or techno, how would you describe it?
First of all, we only try to do what we like, we try not to get influenced by current trends, although we always pay attention to new releases, ready to give a positive evaluation. We make people dance
focusing on the groove more than on the history behind it.
Our aim is to make people let themselves go
as we consider it the main aspect of what ‘s known as “House Party “ or sometimes even ”Rave Party” .
Moving away from the dance floor, what other music do you listen to? And do current, contemporary sounds and styles influence you in the studio? Or would you describe it as a timeless working environment?
In our spare time, we feel free to listen to many different kinds of music, from drum and bass to new jazz, artists like SENOR COCONUT, LOS SAMPLERS, who reached the top with their cd DESCARGAS in 2000.
Other names we like to listen to are U-ZIQ ,FREDERIC GALLIANO, DJ SHADOW, TOSCA, PEACE ORCHESTRA , FUTURE 3, SCAPE , LISA CARBON, BOARDS OF CANADA.
What’s your favorite producing tool and do you also use hardware for your productions?
Our favorite tool is Ableton, together with Machine of Native Instruments and with the unique, irreplaceable Roland 909 . We love drum machine, sounds that come out of it are a guarantee on the dancefloor.
Do you have other than the obvious things like equipment, clean underwear or your passport with you? What are three essentials you bring with you on the road?
Other than socks and underwear…well & we always take our TRAKTOR bag with us!! That ‘s where we keep our music background, our “heritage” to make each possible night, =THE NIGHT”!!!
We used to go around with 100/120 vinyls, heavy like hell!!! Now we look at the practical side of it: we believe that with a pair of vinyls and a controller we can perfectly express our style despite the light weight!! We’re
skeptical about the current Radical Vinyl attitude. Actually, being totally sustained by technology, we can definitely count on thousands of tracks, all played on vinyls in the past.
What’s your favorite tune from the last months you constantly play in your DJ sets?
The record that more than others defines our music essence today is: PLAYING WHAT by CHRIS WOOD & MEATon MOONHARBOUR a perfect mix of groove and deep sounds
This Summer there are some particular gigs that you are waiting for?
