Names like Dubfire or Monika Kruse are well known and dominate the headlines of the electronic music scene since years but they also run there own labels like SCI+TEC and Terminal M. Straight ahead out of this meltin pot we got the chance for short Interview with a smoking hot new talent, based on both of this brands with a constantly and impressing output of fantastic releases. Viva la Electronica talked with DEMA, who lifes in Milan, about his relationship with Dubfire some highlights of the last month and how all had begun.
Hello Pietro thanks for talking to us. Now it’s April, how do you reflect back in 2013? What lessons do you take into the new year and did you had a special moment you still remember?
2013 has been a great year, probably the best one in my dj career because It has been full of important moments. About the “gigs side”, in 2013 I have taken part in some big events like Refresh Festival, Sonar Festival, Amsterdam Dance Event and two Sci+Tec Showcase, plus I have been in some very famous clubs like Cielo in New York, Amnesia, Studio80, Egg London, Waaghenbau and more.. About the “music and production side”, last year has been great too, full of good works, probably the most important has been my Framing Ep released on Sci+Tec, it has been like a dream and the people still love it. So I hope this 2014 will be better and better!
What does 2014 hold for you and your musical pursuits? Are there any big plans or is it business as usual?
This year I have decided to change a bit in my releases. I have came back in a more techno sound.. between march and april have been released 4 my new techno works on Octopus, Ideal Audio, Elevate and MBelektronics, plus some techno remixes. I’m happy about this my new way.
And I’m changing a bit also in gig selection, I’m a bit more focused on main stream club for this year.. the next important stop will be at Sankeys on 10 May with Dubfire.
Since when are you involved in electronic music and when was the point of breakthrough which let you become professional?
I started listening to electronic music when I was 14 and I was fascinated by the possibility of manipulating the sounds, to create something new, something out of the ordinary. At the beginning I worked with my pc on mashups and “home made” remixes as a joke and after some time, I decided to buy a DJ console and started to play with vinyl and CDs. Then 7 years ago, I started to produce my own music, very minimal style. The Breakthrough has been probably when clubs, agency and labels have started to be interested in me and people has started to follow my work because it has an own style.
You release on famous labels like SCI+TEC or Terminal M how is your releationship to the lable owner´s? Is your releationship rather based on a business level or do you also have personal contact to the other artists?
I think I have a good releationship with all the label owners, like Ali Dubfire, Monika Kruse, Oliver Huntemann, Uto Karem etc.. I know them personally, we stay in contact via internet or mobile and we play also togheter in some gigs or showcase during the year. I like to meet and know personally artists and label manager when it´s possible because the human side of this work is very important.
What’s your favorite producing tool and do you also use hardware for your productions?
I use principally Fl Studio on my laptop and sometimes Logic on Mac Book. 10 year ago I have started to work with Fl Studio and actually is the best Sequencer for me. I have learned to use all the internal plugin and effects and the results are every day better.
In the latest years I have used also Logic for some my tracks, I have found a better collection of samples and plugin inside, but I think it is a bit more difficult to use.
For sure the best results are with external midi key, with it is possible to have the total control of the sequencer and create precise bass lines, melodies etc..
Do current, contemporary sounds and styles influence you in the studio? Or would you describe it as a timeless working environment?
In this last year I’m very focused on techno sound with hypnotic ambience, strong basslines and energetic groove. I like to use strange vocals and sometimes some funky influences in order to make the tunes more particulars and “danceable”.
With my music I try to reflect the sound that I like produce and play during my gigs. My aim is not only to express my sound, but also transmit energy and positive vibes. In particular to give the idea of “party” every time that someone listens my tunes.
What’s your favorite tune from the last months you constantly play in your DJ sets?
That’s difficult to say, because every week I receive a lot of new good promos. For sure in the last year I have some artists like Alan Fitzpatrick or Sam Paganini that are always in my bag!
