Markus Ferdinand aka M.In is a bustling person in the EDM szene he released on famous labels like Desolat, KD Music, Kling Klong and many more. He have a verry wide spectrum of producing skills. In this interview which was made for the Zoo:Technique Showcase Markus will give us more informations about his upcomming projects in 2014.
Hello M.in! Thanks for talking to us. Now it’s March, how do you reflect back on 2013? What lessons do you take into the New Year and did you had a very special moment you still remember?
2013 was the best year in my career with 6 gigs each month and a lot of special moments. But it was a pity I didn’t played on Ibiza last year the first time. But this year I’m back at Privilege. At the end of 2013 I had a lot of great parties and I met a lot of nice people!
My first gig in Belgrade was pretty cool, MUK – Giessen was fantastic and also Johnny Mauser – Lüdenscheid, Sass – Vienna / Austria, Ringlokschuppen – Bielefeld, Perron 1 – Brig / Swiss, Tante Emma – Innsbruck, Concord Atlantic – Paris / France, World Music Dom (Football Stadium Commerzbank Arena) – Frankfurt or Sisyphos – Berlin were my favourite gigs in 2013! Not because it was packed everywhere but the crowd had so much love for my music!
At the area I played at World Music Dome the floor got packed with my set and the people was soooo cool! Unforgettable moment for sure!
What does 2014 hold for you and your musical pursuits? Are there any big plans or is it business as usual?
In 2014 I will release my second album! The album will call “M.in –To The M.ax” and yes it will push forward! After my first album was more for listening and not really for the club I wanted to do something for the floor now! I also working on a new version of “Frauen & Blumen” I made in 2010 together with Patrick Kunkel (Cocoon Rec) and Harold Todd (Saxophonist of Lenny Kravitz).
Also we redesign “Kaufemusik Promopool” and “My Favourite Freaks Booking” and I will start “My Favourite Freaks Music” also! MFF is more as only a booking agency as all Artists are more as only friends, for me and Lars (my partner and main booker of the agency) it is a family! So we have a lot of work in 2014!!!
Since when are you involved in electronic music and when was the point of breakthrough which let you become professional?
I’m djing since 1991! I started to play music as 11 years old boy. For me it was always something for the people and not to become a cool guy or getting rich! In 1999 I started to play in clubs and in 2004 I released my first vinyl on Semi Automatic the label of Ibrahim Alfa … just to let you know, 10 years after I starting again a collaboration together with Ibrahim Alfa for my upcoming album! Before I started under the alias M.in I had a lot of different names but the most important was Kaufmann & Ferdinand as we started our first own label together and since we release the first vinyl “Der Schmeisser, Kaufmann & Ferdinand – Kassel Von Hinten” we got bookings in whole Germany. But I never made it to other countries in this time! 5 years ago I release the first remix under my new alias M.in!
My first EP was not only my first big success it was also the first big success of Off Recordings (Berlin) and both (Off and M.in) got a boost! Together with my buddy Bastian Schuster I played the first gig outside of Germany and directly in one of the top clubs of the world – Space – Ibiza! Since this time I’m played again and again in different countries but my real breakthrough came with my release on Desolat as “M.in –Sing And Blow At The Same Time” was a big hit all big names played again and again and the crowd also loved this track! I also reached #4 at the Resident Advisor Top50! At this time I realized I really made my dreams comes true!
Do you have a residency Club you play regular?
No. Before I got popular I played every week 1 – 3 bookings in my resident clubs but I wasn’t really happy because a lot of people talked bullshit about me and everything was totally fluffy! It wasn’t something I wanted to do all the time. After I got popular I had some much fun met a lot of nice people and had wonderful experiences! Sure I thinking about a residency again but not at the moment.
But for sure I have clubs I’m playing 2 – 4 times the year! This is totally enough for me 🙂
What’s your favorite producing tool and do you also use hardware for your productions?
I’m totally in love with my Waves Bundles or Arturia Mini Moog Vst’s! Also URS or UAD plugins are pretty cool!
Ah, and I love my microphone! It’s not a special one but I recorded different sounds I using as percussion sounds and sometimes I also recorded my own voice for some remixes.
At the moment I only use XoXboX (303 Clone) and MBase09 (I bought after a gig at Tante Emma Club in Innsbruck totally drunk). But asap I will also buy some new stuff as I miss my Korg Electribes or my Yamaha RM1-X I own years ago.
Do current, contemporary sounds and styles influence you in the studio? Or would you describe it as a timeless working environment?
Sure I getting influenced by other music and new sounds but I always try to do my own thing. That’s why I bought a 303 Clone and produced tracks like “M.in feat Nick Maurer – Acid Test”!
But after my debut album in 2012 I tried to produce a deeper sound as it was “the hype” and I loved to play this music also. For me it was also a learning process as I never played melodies or harmonies in my tracks!
Then I realized I got lost and didn’t know where to go next that’s why I was thinking a long time about to break with M.in and starting something new. But I am M.in! It’s not a project it’s me! This is why I made a restart now and I’m 100% back with techhouse and a little bit of techno!
How do you spend your time between your gigs when you Travel?
Sleeping or drunk 🙂
Do you have a particular gig in the winter/spring season you are looking forward to?
Not really but after winter I will play at Madrid Music Days and I think this will be a great experience!
I don’t like winter … I love the sun!!!
What’s your favorite tune from the last months you constantly play in your DJ sets?
Dosem – Secret Code (Suara) and Karl Friedrich – Claps (Hommage – Label of Monkey Safari)!
