INTERVIEW WITH MARCO RESMANN
Viva la Electronica Magazine is proud to presents a exclusive Interview with the Upon You Mastermind Marco Resmann from Berlin, Germany!
Hey Marco thank you for taking your time to give Viva la Electronica an exclusive interview.
Your Label “Upon. You” has existed for five years now. This is very impressive, can you name us some of your personal milestones which mostly influenced “Upon. You” and the career of Marco Resmann?
I would say everything that happened within the last 5 years influenced me somehow. My daily work with the label, the communication and exchange with the artists, the time I’ve spent in the studio and of course the time I’ve spent with travelling and DJing has affected and shaped me the most as a A&R and as an artist.
“The 5-year anniversary is very close. Can we expect anything special from this anniversary?”
We’ve just released a double CD package with exclusive tracks from the whole Upon. You crew and remixes from guest artists who have chosen tracks from the back catalogue. Furthermore we are in the middle of a busy release tour and are going to stop by in cities like Amsterdam, London, Hamburg, Zurich and Basel.
Are there any plans for sub labels or new artists?
We’ve launched our sub-label Sweet & Sour Series a while ago. We put it on hold for now and are focussing more on the main label. In addition to that we’ve reactivated our digital exclusive series. With Magit Cacoon and Sierra Sam we’ve also recently signed new artists.
Who is in your opinion the most influential artis on UY at the moment?”
Ruede Hagelstein, ONNO and Emerson Todd have the biggest output on high quality tracks at the moment.
How’s your relationship to the Watergate Club (Berlin)?
Really good! I’m resident there since 2006 and have mixed the Watergate 10. The Club celebrates its 10th anniversary and has released a great compilation, which also includes a track from me.
There is a good relationship between you and Pan-Pot and you were a part of them during their beginning. Are there any collaborations/plans for the future?
Nothing planned yet. But we’re often saying that it’s time for a new collab.
During research we found out that you are a part of Luna City Express (most people, including us, didn’t know that). Do you keep yourself in the background on purpose?
Not at all!
What’s the difference between Marco Resmann and Luna City Express? How does Norman influence you when you are showing up as Luna City Express?
I’d say Marco Resmann is more edgy than LCE, which is more playful. To work with Norman in the studio or to play with him in the club is always great. We share ideas and moments and have a close bond on different levels. He’s one of my best friends, he’s my soul mate, he’s my inspiration and of course my musically complement.
Can you explain the collaboration with Moon Harbour? Will you also release records on Upon You as Luna City Express or is it only a project dedicated to Moon Harbour?
Luna City Express grew up with Moon Harbour and is a main part of the label and their own agency nowadays. Matthias Tanzmann is always the first one who gets our new stuff. If he doesn’t like something we send it to other labels. Upon. You is of course an option but there are other labels where our sound fits much more than on Upon.You.
Nevertheless we released a track on a Various Artist EP on Upon. You in 2007.
You also play at SONAR Festival in Barcelona regularly. What do you think about the Catalan city and the SONAR Festival?
Barcelona is one of my favourite cities in Europe. I just love this city and its flair. I also have found some great friends overthere during the last years. Sonar is still important for the electronic music scene, even though the parties around the main festival are more popular than the festival itself.
What’s your favourite producing tool and do you also use hardware for your productions?
My hardware collection is an essential part of my studio and my productions. I couldn’t work only with software on the computer, even though I have some great tools like The Universal Audio PlugIns.
You are touring around a lot. What is your recipe to stay well and healthy during this time?
A healthy life style is more than important if you wanna survive this kind of business. Healthy food, sport and sauna are always on top of my weekly agenda.
“What’s your favourite tune from the last months you constantly play in your DJ sets?”
Oh there are a couple of tunes which I play constantly. Here some of them…
Emerson Todd – Inside Out – Upon.You
Digitaline – Stuck Off The Realness – Cityfox
Ruede Hagelstein – Give A Little Slap To Your Soul (Sebo K Remix) – Upon. You
Daniel Dexter – Storm – Poker Flat
Storm Queen – It Goes On – Environ
