INTERVIEW WITH SMASH TV
We are back with a fresh interview from Smash TV. The two guys are good fellows since years and now they talked to Viva la Electronica about there new album which is in the pipeline and what you can expect in 2013. They will also be with us on tour at Docks Club in Hamburg besides KINK, John Lagora & Bob Morane, Kiki and many more.
For Holger and Kai aka SMASH TV, music is not just about the dancefloor, it’s a way of life and a means of communication on a deep emotional level. This becomes apparent on their latest releases on Get-Physical, Leena and Soulfooled as well as their live-& dj-sets, which achieved them the reputation of being the “last men standing”.
“Hi Holger & Kai thanks for talking to us. Now it’s April, how do you reflect back on 2012? What lessons do you take into the new year?
Holger: Thanx for having us. 2012 was a quite busy year for us. We had to combine the touring and the work on our album. That was quite challenging.
Kai: One lesson we learned is not to order the bottle of Jägermeister too early in the night 🙂
“What does 2013 hold for you and your musical pursuits? Are there any big plans or is it business as usual?”
Our album „NOISE &GIRLS“ is out since last week which is a big step for us. this album will lead us trough the year. We ll release several tracks out o fit with remixers from guys that we like and respect. We just finished the work on a new liveset to present the album as a live set. So it s mostly all around it this year.
Kai: Yeah, and we are looking forward to play some great clubs and festivals. We gonna play at melt festival this year, vertigo festival, at the picnic electronic in barcelona and in montreal, at the mediterranean weekend festival which is a cruise from roma to barcelona and so on. This year is definetly a step forward for us and it s very exciting so no business as usual for us.
“Over the years do you feel as if you’ve settled more into the production/label management groove as opposed to Djing or do you still enjoy the club environment as much as ever?”
Holger: We enjoy the club environment more than ever actually! its the essential part of this culture to us, it’s where the magic happens. you know, you gotta keep movin’, it’s like being a shark, once you stop movin’ – you’re done! we also enjoy the creative part in the studio still alot of course! and one couldn’t exist without the other – to make people dance with your music you need to know something about the club, and to play the right shit in the club you better know something about how it’s done kiddo!! ;) to find the right balance is still a challenge though, haha
“You have started your own night at the Kater Holzig, Berlin called True Bromance , can you give us some names of the upcoming dates in 2013 and what can we expect of this night?”
Holger: We got to know the term bromance one year ago when we played Resolute in New york for our friend Nektarios, so we felt the desire to get the most bromance possible out of one night. that could only be achieved by playing together with your friends and make them feel good, what better place could you chose for that than Kater? So far we had 2 nights with Tiefschwarz, Martin Landsky, Siopis and GummiHz as our guests.
Kai: Atm it turns out to be a little difficult cause we aren´t rarely in Berlin on the weekend, but we’re gonna do 2 more before Kater will transform in August again…
“Are you getting inspired by other music, for example classic or soul music for the productions of you? Do you like to sample some older material?”
Kai: We are getting inspiration from lots of other music styles like HipHop, Jazz, Pop, Metal, whatever…
Holger: We totally dig sampling, but we try to do it like DJ Premier would, meaning to do it in a way people can’t tell where you got it from! dropping the hookline from a huge hit on a deephouse bit is pretty amazing though… 😉
“Which artist would you like to remix in the future or cooperate?”
“What’s your favourite producing tool and do you also use hardware for your productions?”
We are totally into hardware. Nearly every sound on the album comes out of one of my machines. it s hard to decide which tool is the favorit one. the most used on on our album is definetly the 808. we even made a love song about it.
“How do you spend your time between your gigs when you Travel?”
Holger: We try to see as much of the places we go to as we can. one great aspect of this job is that you get to meet the promoters, the local Djs and all their friends so most of the time you have great people to hang out with. thats pretty amazing!
“You are touring around a lot. What is your recipe to stay well and healthy?”
Kai: Well… we try to some kind of workout at least two times a week, this is just not the healthiest Lifestyle, you know? We also try our best eating healthy but that could work better… but this winter went without any major diseases so far!!
