INTERVIEW WITH TIEFSCHWARZ
Viva la Electronica is proud to presents an exclusive Interview with Tiefschwarz. The Berlin based guys Ali and Basti Schwarz are Tiefschwarz, this German deep house duo have proven just how apt a moniker can be.
“You both left Stuttgart in the beginning of 2002. Are you missing the beautiful countryside and the “Schwäbisch” small-town atmosphere?”
I miss Swabian food most of all, but not really as I cook it myself. Stuttgart is a beautiful and green city if you know where to look.
“Do you enjoy the big city life of Berlin or do you have plans to go back to your hometown in the future?”
I do love Berlin and am planning on staying here forever.
“Tiefschwarz was involved into Four Music,a Stuttgart based label of the early days of German Hip Hop and Rap Music. Do you still have projects in the pipeline with Four Music?”
Four music now belongs to Sony and we were more connected to Fine which was a sub-label of theirs based in London which released electronic music. This was all years ago though!
“We are fans of the Four Music artists “Die Fantastischen Vier”. Could you ever imagine to make a cooperation with them or would this never be an option to mix electronic music with Hip Hop?”
I lived with one of the guys for 5 years so I know them pretty well. Back in the early 90s they gave their second ever concert in my flat. 300 people were rammed inside! The police showed up of course.
“Your Label Souvenir is existing for 6 years now. This is very impressive, can you name us some of your personal milestones which mostly influenced Souvenir Music and the career of Tiefschwarz?”
For me the major milestone on Souvenir is the consistency of development we’ve developed over the years. It’s more about the teamwork and moving forward slowly step by step.
“The Souvenir Crew increases a little bit every year. Who are the new upcoming artists/members for 2012?”
This year we have a sampler coming out which is the follow up to In The City with plenty of fresh, young talents including Emanuel Satie, Denis Horvat, CJ Jeff and Sierra Sam but we’re also always releasing from our core family of Re.You, Chris Wood & Meat, Sante and Ruede Hagelstein
“Who of you is the more productive head when you are in the studio?”
Basti is more in the studio and I’m more taking care of label business but when we work together on Tiefschwarz productions we both match pretty well.
“Are you getting inspired by other music, for example classic or soul music for the productions of Tiefschwarz? Do you like to sample or rip off some older material?”
We used to sample from old vinyls a lot – well we actually still do but heavily manipulate any sounds so its very hard to identify.
“What’s your favourite producing tool and do you also use hardware for your productions?”
Right now we use mainly computer and plugins but when we move our studio in August we will begin to use more analogue outboard gear as well.
“We saw Tiefschwarz playing some Shows in Miami. Do you think the Winter Music Conference is an important event in the USA?”
It’s definitely an important event for the electronic music scene in the USA, maybe not in a commercial way but getting everyone together in a relevant way it’s successful as you get to meet all DJs and producers from around the globe.
“Also at SONAR Festival Tiefschwarz play some gigs in Barcelona. What do you think about the Catalan city and the SONAR Festival?”
Barcelona is a beautiful city as a tourist and also to DJ, but I’m always happy to leave again. I wouldn’t like to live there, I much prefer the grey of Berlin!
“You are touring around a lot. What is your recipe to stay well and healthy during the summer?”
Not only during the Summer! It’s always about balance. If you exaggerate too much you pay the price. It’s about taking time off, eating well, exercising, etc. – in the end nightlife really saps your energy!
“What’s your favourite tune from the last months you constantly play in your DJ sets?”
I’m really feeling Aidan Lavelle’s Tinnitus on Rebellion and also David Squillace’s first release Do Somebody on his new label This and That.
“Are there any artists you ever want to remix or to produce with?”
There are so many great artists out there! I would love to work with Grizzly Bear and Björk.
